Getting In Shape By Swimming

When it comes to giving your body a workout, swimming is one of the best things you can do, as it is a way for you to work out your whole body at once in a manner that does not have a negative impact on your bones, muscles, or joints, and if you have a swimming pool, it is also an easy workout for you to take up.

Of course, it can be more difficult to get in your swimming workout if you do not have your own pool, but consider joining a gym that has a pool, or see if your local YMCA has a pool that you will be able to use.

One of the keys to getting into shape by swimming will be staying consistent with your swimming workout – which is why it will be helpful if you have a pool of your own; rather than swimming “a few days a week,” you should make an effort to swim at least six days each week, as this will enable you to swim a reasonable amount instead of forcing you to try to “swim a whole bunch at once.”

Focus on having a swimming motion that is smooth and effortless, as this will allow your body to naturally work itself out in the water, instead of forcing your body to deal with unnecessary stress and tension. It will also be good for you to vary the stroke you are using when swimming; although swimming is a total body workout, you will be able to emphasize different muscles when you do different types of strokes, and this will go a long way in increasing the effectiveness of your swimming workout.

If you have your own pool, you will be able to swim every day in your own backyard (while also getting the vitamin D your body so badly needs), but even if you do not have your own pool, you should have no problem finding access to one, and you will be able to engage in a total body workout that is fun and effective while still being low-impact!

How To Keep Your Lawn Healthy During This Summer’s Heat Wave

If you have gone anywhere east of the Rocky Mountains in the last month or so, it is surely no secret to you that most of the country has been going through one of the heaviest heat waves on record, and there is no end in sight right now – and while this means many different things for different people, one thing this means for just about everyone is that it is not easy for them to keep their lawn alive! Of course, there is some amount of resignation you will have to have as far as this heat wave goes, realizing that you will not be able to keep your lawn as lush as you usually like to keep it – but this does not mean that you have to allow your lawn to die; you simply have to know the right steps to take!

If you want your lawn to be able to withstand the heat, the first thing it will need is water, but while you can usually get away with watering at the wrong time of day when it is not so hot, you will be in trouble if you try to water at the wrong time of day right now; the roots of your grass grow during the day, and because of this, early morning is the best time for you to water!

And just as the roots of the grass grow during the day, the grass itself grows at night, so if you have spots in your yard that seem like they are not doing well no matter how much water you are giving them in the morning, try to give them some extra water at night.

And lastly, you should realize that as much as you might not want your grass to die, grass can be regrown far more easily than shrubs and trees – so as much as you focus on your grass, make sure you are focusing on your shrubs and trees that much more!

This summer heat wave will have to end eventually, but until we reach that point at last, keep these tips in mind in order to keep your grass alive!

Ways to Help Kids Deal With Stress

Is your child dealing with a lot of stress? Are you unsure how to assist your child as he or she deals with anxiety? These methods will teach your child coping skills for stressful encounters.

Walk it out. By walking away, your child is actively resisting and choosing how to handle the stress. Children have to learn how to deal with that fight or flight stress response they feel when stressed out. By teaching him to walk away, you teach him to grab hold of the reins and say whoa, I’m not going along for this ride anymore. Instead, have him run or walk until he gets relief from the stress. Physical activity releases stress and is an appropriate response in many environments (recess, gym, at home, outside with friends).

Teach your child how to express and deal with stress through the use of art. A lot of kids can’t talk about stress, but they can express themselves in pictures. Give your child some art supplies and do some art together such a “emotional painting”, where you paint a picture that depicts how you feel at the moment. Let your child go in whatever direction she feels led, without telling her how to do it. You might led by example and draw a cartoon strip about something that evokes emotion in you. Open up the topic for conversation, but don’t push anything.

Teach your child the power of the written word. Your child may expressing himself better through writing than talking. Dedicate a journal to communication between you and your child; write notes to each other in it each day. When your child seems particularly stressed, get out the notebook and write to him, asking him to write back about anything he’s feeling. Use this notebook as a communication tool. Use humor when appropriate, and investigate solutions through the shared notes.

Parenting can be tough, so remind yourself that you are teaching your child how to deal with stress as an adult.

How To Make Campfire Popcorn

It is always nice to have a hot meal at the end of the day when you are camping, and while there are the old camping standbys of s’mores and hot dogs, one treat you might not have thought of is popcorn!

As long as you start a fire at the end of the day (and bring along a few simple materials), you can make some delicious campfire popcorn – which is a magnificent way to close out a day of camping!

image

If you want to make some delicious campfire popcorn, you will need to bring tin foil with you on your camping trip, and will also, of course, need to bring a bit of cooking oil and some popcorn kernels (as well as any seasoning you typically put on your popcorn.

To prepare the popcorn for the fire, you will need to tear off a sheet of tin foil about a foot and a half long, and will need to put two teaspoons of oil and four teaspoons of popcorn kernels into the center of the foil. Once you have done this, you will need to make a sort of “cooking tent” with the foil, first bringing two opposite corners together and rolling them down two or three times, then bringing the other two corners together and rolling these down as well (when you do this, make sure there is enough space inside for the kernels to pop).

The Ultimate Campfire Kitchen Cooking Guide!

The process from this point is simple; firstly, you need to attach your “tent” to a stick (just like you would a marshmallow or a hot dog), and you need to set the foil in the coals. Secondly, once you hear the first “pop” of the popcorn, you will raise the tin foil tent off the coals and hold it over the fire, shaking it around a little bit until the sounds of the popping start to space themselves out – to about one pop every two or three seconds.

Of course, the last step of the process is a no-brainer: enjoy your campfire popcorn!

How To Keep Up With Your Pool

A pool can be an enjoyable part of your summer, but with all the work it takes to keep your pool clean and in great shape for swimming, it can also seem like more work than it is actually worth! If you want to get optimal enjoyment out of your pool during the summer, it will be important for you to understand exactly what you need to understand in keeping your pool in great shape, as a thorough understanding makes things a whole lot easier.

Balancing the water: The pH, total alkalinity, and calcium in your pool will all affect one another, so you need to pay attention to all of them and make sure they all stay in balance. People often do not pay close enough attention to these elements of the water until something goes wrong, and then it often becomes a whole lot of work to set things right again!

Chlorinate: If you have a pool, you surely understand the importance of keeping the chlorine levels where they should be, and you probably shock your pool once every two or three weeks, but in addition to doing this, you should keep an eye on your chlorine levels throughout the week, even adding chlorine throughout the week when the levels start to dip. And remember, the sun will break down chlorine in your water, so you will want to make sure you add chlorine after the sun has gone down.

Keeping the pool clean: Nothing will ruin the clarity and the levels of your water more quickly than dirt and leaves hanging around in the pool for extended periods of time; always make sure you clean out the filter daily, skim any leaves or grass off the surface of the water, and use something that can clean the base of your pool on a consistent basis.

Once you keep all these things in mind, it will be much easier to keep up with the cleaning and maintenance of your pool so that the pool remains an enjoyable part of the summer – all summer long!

Exploring The Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Microfilter

When you are going hiking or camping, one of the most important things will be that you have fresh water, and while you can boil water in order to make it clean (which is a time-consuming process), and while you can use iodine or chlorine to clear up the water you find (which makes the water taste funny!), you can also choose to carry a water filter with you. With the Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Microfilter, you can fill up a liter of water within about one and a half minutes, using about 48 pumps of the filter; while “self-pumping” a filter might sound like a lot of work, the Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Microfilter actually makes it quite easy, and you would certainly rather do the work to pump some water than drink water that tastes like chlorine or iodine!

The Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Microfilter weighs only eleven ounces – which makes it a very light addition to your pack – and it packs down small, as it is a very compact device. The filter and the “out” hose (the hose that goes down into the dirty water) can be kept in the sturdy Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Microfilter carrying case, and inside of this same carrying case is a separate plastic bag in which you can keep the “in” hose (the hose that goes into your water bottle).

Not only is it easy to pump and clean water with the Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Microfilter, but it even comes with fixtures that allow you to easily pump water into a Nalgene bottle or into a Camelbak Water Bladder without removing them from your pack!

If you are looking for the best product for providing you with clean drinking water as you hike, look no further than the Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Microfilter!

Tips For Enjoying Adventures As A Family

Among the most important things for the patriarch or matriarch of a family to do is to make sure that you and your family are making memories; after all, when you children grow up and move away from home, the main thing that will stick out to them as well as to you is the memories your family made while they were growing up. And one of the best ways of all for you to go about making sure you are making memories with your family is for you to manufacture “adventures” – and when it comes to adventures, it will be useful for you to have a few ideas as to what you can do.

One great idea for creating an adventure – and therefore creating a significant memory – with your family is for you to go rafting; regardless of whether you are simply going rafting on a lazy river or are going whitewater rafting to where you need a guide and life vests, you are sure to enjoy this time, and to create some lasting memories.

When you start making an effort to create “adventures” with your family, you will find that it is often the most intense times that create the best adventures, and the best memories – and when it comes to intense (and stressful!) experiences, there is not a whole lot that beats going camping with your entire family.

Of course, if you have no real interest in creating memories and adventure along the path of “stress,” you can even create memories through simply hanging out around town with your family; regardless of whether it is a night of dinner at a restaurant, some time in the downtown of your city, or even an outing to a museum or aquarium in your city or town, you will find that “adventures” and memories will be the theme of the day when you get your whole family out there together. This path will lead your children toward tremendous memories - and even if these are things that they do not necessarily enjoy at the time, they will become things that everyone in your family remembers for the rest of their lives!

Tips For Conquering Sleep Problems Without Taking Anything

Anyone who has ever had regular sleeping problems knows that these problems can absolutely ruin the days that follow bad nights of sleep. And even though plenty of sleep aids are available that work fine, many people find that they feel groggy the day after taking such sleep aids. If you have had problems sleeping, and these problems have not been cured by sleeping pills or valerian root or melatonin – or, if these measures have left you feeling groggy the day after – pay attention.

A relaxed mind and body will be the biggest aid in helping you sleep if you have been experiencing problems with sleeping. Conversely, when it comes to getting poor sleep, one of the biggest things that will contribute is stress and tension in your body and mind. This means that – if you have been experiencing problems sleeping – the best way to ease back into sleep is to find the best way to relax your mind and body.

One thing that can be a huge benefit when you are trying to relax your body is heat, and a shower is a great way to get heat on your body. If you usually take a shower in the morning, consider taking one at night instead, as this will relax your body.

Another way to relax your body using heat is by drinking tea, but make sure that you drink caffeine-free tea, or else you will exacerbate the sleep problems.

Stretching before you go to bed is another method many people have found helps them unwind in their body and sleep better. This stretching can take the form of the regular sorts of stretches you typically do before a workout, or it can take the form of yoga – which helps a lot of people relax.

Meditation is another approach that is similar to yoga, as it helps you regulate your breathing while also calming your body. And if you decide that meditation is not for you, you can help your body unravel before bed by finding some breathing exercises that work for you and help you breathe regularly and deeply.

It can certainly be a frustrating situation, when you are unable to sleep; but if you follow these tips, you will probably be able to find a way to fall asleep more easily, without taking anything at all.

Strange Fruits to Add to Your Dinner Table

There are many different types of fresh produce eaten around the world.  Some of these exotic fruits and veggies are becoming more prominant in our local markets. Their shape, color, and textures are different then what you may have experienced before. Since all fruits and vegetables are packed with essential vitamins and minerals, adding some of these exotic things will be great for you.

You may have seen a start fruit in the store and have had no idea what it is.  When you cut a star fruit the slices are in the shape of a star. These are also known as a carambola fruit. Star fruit both texturally and flavor wise are like a green grape. You can eat this fruit with the skin on, and it can be a bit crunchy and tart at times. This great fruit is high in vitamin C while being low in sugar. Look for firm yellow colored fruits with little brown on the skin.

Prickly pear is another interesting addition you may find in some stores and decide to add to your table. You can tell by the spines that this is a cactus. This cactus is actually found all over the United States, but primarily in the west. Both high in dietary fiber and also in vitamin C, prickly pear is worth trying to add to your list of produce you will eat. Clearly you need to remove the needles and spines before you can eat the prickly pear. The spines and needles can be scraped off, but it is much easier just to skin them. After the skin is removed, you can cut them for salads or for cooking. The green paddles of the cactus taste similarly to green beans. The fruit of the prickly pear are comparable to strawberries or watermelon (depending on the type) There are literally more then a hundred different prickly pear varieties.

These foods may seem very odd at first glance, but they are both a great addition to salads and eaten fresh. Stay healthy by adding these fruits to your diet.  The high vitamin C can assist you this winter by keeping you healthy.

Using Craigslist To Sell Your Items

Because one man’s junk is another man’s treasure, you may be thinking about selling some of your old stuff; if you are thinking of this, your first thought might be eBay. But as great as eBay can be when you want to sell your old stuff, Craigslist is sometimes a much better alternative to selling your stuff on eBay.

Craigslist is used for lots of different things, but the sale of items is the biggest (and most useful!) way in which Craigslist is used. When you list your items on Craigslist, you will be able to sell within a certain area, and you will also be able to negotiate with your buyers directly. This differs from selling your items on eBay in that, on eBay, you will usually sell your item auction-style, with a “Buy Now” option at a higher price. While it might seem like this makes you more money, many seasoned eBay veterans know how to get the lowest price possible by buying things on auction!

When you list an item on Craigslist, people will contact you via email; but don’t worry, they will never know your email unless you email them back. Craigslist accomplishes this by anonymizing your email address, so the emails reach you without anyone being able to know your real email address if you do not want them to. When you sell on Craigslist, you can choose to sell for a set price, or to “best offer,” or both! You are in complete control when you sell your items on Craigslist, which is the biggest advantage this service provides.

If you decide to sell on eBay, one thing to make sure you keep in mind is the fact that people like to feel like they got a good deal. Give yourself room for people to “negotiate” you down by setting the price higher than what you actually expect to sell it for. One final thing to remember when dealing with people on Craigslist is that you should meet them at a general location to give them the items, instead of having them meet you at your house.

If you are selling your old items, there are certainly times when eBay is the best option; but remember that Craigslist is a great option as well!
